NEW YORK, NY
GONE - Curated by Roosi
GONE explores introspection, connection and self-discovery through a blend of original paintings and sculptures.
Utilizing USM's customization, the exhibition challenges viewers to reconsider connectivity and perspective, blurring the lines between art and modular furniture design. On exhibition at USM's SoHo showroom until November 2, 2024, the space is transformed with an altar, zen garden and family shrine reflecting the artists' personal interpretations of worship and the search for meaning adds an earth-based installation.
Floral artist Naoko de Oliveira Yoshii of Kabuki NY adds an earth-based installation, featuring snake-like trees, sea moss, and white stones, creating an eerie yet sacred ambiance.
In GONE, the USM system components are more than just furniture—they become integral parts of the artwork, serving as frames, pedestals and structural elements that the artists manipulate to suit their visions. This unique integration challenges traditional notions of both art and furniture, creating a dynamic interplay between form and function.
Artists such as Eri Wakiyama, Asif Hoque and Diana Alvarado bring their unique visions to the table. Wakiyama’s custom panel artwork explores her personal identity through the identities of her ghoulish female subjects, while Hoque’s suspended painting blends classical and contemporary elements that champion his Bangladeshi heritage and subvert Western depictions of art. Alvarado’s ceramic works delve into personal and collective memory with pieces that reflect the identity of her culturally diverse East Los Angeles background.
Daniel Arsham, a New York-based artist known for disrupting contemporary art codes, collaborated with USM to create The USM Veiled Console Chair, a sculptural work showcased at Milan Design Week 2022, reflecting his ongoing exploration of visibility and concealment – the work will be presented for the first time stateside in this show. Other notable artists include; Eny Lee Parker, Leon Xu, Walid Shaharul, Othelo Gervacio, Alfonso Gonzalez Jr., Eny Lee Parker, Gogy Esparza, Mike Reesé, Kyle Reyes, Nikkolos Mohammed, Leyla Fischer, Ellen Pong and Matthew Zagada each adding their distinct voice to the collective narrative.
GONE invites you to connect with the art on a personal level, reflect on your own experiences, and redefine your understanding of the higher self. The transformation of the showroom into a sanctuary for contemplation, along with the innovative use of USM furniture pieces, offers a fresh perspective on how art can shape and be shaped by its environment.
